You may be wondering what a plank owner is, so here’s the explanation.
When I was on active duty in the Air Force, I had the opportunity to work with all the services when I was assigned to a joint organization in San Antonio. A joint organization means all the services had people assigned there.
All the services have traditions and points of pride and I borrowed the idea of plank ownership from the US Navy.
Back when wood was the primary building material for ships, each member of the first crew of a new ship “owned” a plank, hence the term “plank owner.”
So when we reorganized, Navy Chief Norma Skipper made plank owner certificates for everyone assigned to the organization to recognize that we were the first members of the new organization. Chief Skipper did a great job on the certificate and I still have mine. (Of course I can’t find it. But when I do, I’ll take a picture of it and post it.) Thanks Chief!
When I first started looking online for business info and ideas, I was overwhelmed by everything. I felt like I was drowning in the jargon–html, url, seo, marketing, email, opt-in lists, websites, ranking, optimization, etc.
It occurred to me that the Internet is kind of like a huge ocean and I needed a “ship” to guide me through it. I figured a ship was a pretty good metaphor for an online business sailing through cyberspace; hence “online business plank owner” was born.
Having an online business is my way of being a plank owner on the Internet. Perhaps you want to be a plank owner too? If so,
Go Grab Your Plank,

P.S. Never call a Navy ship a boat.
P.S.S. Never call a Marine who is no longer on active duty an ex-Marine; they’re a former Marine, because once a Marine, always a Marine. Semper fi (always faithful).
